Galas, Batu Sapi Vs People of Malaysia

azlanANALYSIS 17 October - The impending Galas and Batu Sapi by-elections have come about unexpectedly, and will again serve as another important test of support by political parties on both sides.

Twenty per cent of Galas and 38 percent of Batu Sapi voters are Chinese. The majority are bumiputeras.

Political and party insiders had attributed the drop in Chinese support for BN to have caused Galas, which used to be a BN stronghold, to fall to the opposition PAS in the last election. As much as 70 percent of the 2,500 Chinese voters were said to have marked PAS in their ballot papers.

But for Batu Sapi, it is a different scenario: BN took 78 percent of the Muslim bumiputera votes and garnered more than 50 per cent of the Chinese votes in 2008.

Considered to be another BN bastion, it has a mix of 60 percent Muslim bumiputera voters and 38 percent Chinese voters.

Gerakan - Teng Must Go

GEORGE TOWN 1 October - Gerakan had to call for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to remove its Penang chief Dr Teng Hock Nan because of his dismal failure to turn around the party's fortunes and improve its political standing among the Penang electorate.

Teng had promised he would “rebuild the party and lead it to the next level” when he was elected as the state chief in October 2008 with a 10-vote majority, claims the Gerakan grassroots movement in Penang (VGG), which engineered the 10-10-10 EGM.

“However, Gerakan’s image and political standing have plummeted over the last two years under Teng’s leadership,” VGG stated in an online statement posted today.

Vision 2020 Not Achievable Within Next 10 Years

mahathir and rais yatim pc 190309 01KUALA LUMPUR 29 September - The architect of Vision 2020 has come out to say that he believes the target he introduced in 1991, is not likely to be achieved within the next 10 years.

"Whether Vision 2020 is achievable, my fear is it is not achievable by 2020... maybe later," he said, reiterating an opinion he has frequently expressed in recent months.

However, Mahathir Mohamad (left) said, the target could still be achieved if the government changed tack and sought "new direction and different strategies", instead of continuing to depend on foreign direct investment.
